About Basil – Tulsi

About BasilBasil is famous for its fresh, natural and spicy aroma. Basil originated in India where it is known as tulsi which is considered a sacred herb. Basil or tulsi is a member of the Mint family. Basil contains BCP, or (E)-beta-caryophyllene, a natural anti-inflammatory compound that provides its medicinal properties.

General Use of Basil

Basil is used in cosmetics for toning body rub by mixing it with coarse sea salt and vegetable oil. Basil with wine is used to close enlarged pores of the skin. Basil works as an insect repellent and makes the skin smooth, flaccid, and toned.  Basil extracts are often used in facial masks and other beauty products.

Culinary Use of Basil

Basil or tulsi is a versatile herb and has a pleasant taste. It is excellent in tomato-based dishes and spinach. Basil is the main ingredient in pesto. It is used as a flavoring agent in cuisine throughout the world and is vital in Thai and Vietnamese cooking.

Medicinal Use of Basil

Basil is well known antiseptic, analgesic, and antidepressant. Basil is made into a tea which has a sedative effect. A cup of tea after a stressful day is quite relaxing. It treats depression, stress, fatigue, headaches, and migraines. Basil oil massage is very effective.

Basil or tulsi is used in medicines to cure digestive problems such as indigestion, gastric spasm, vomiting, constipation, and nausea. Basil tea after dinner is an aid to digestion.

Basil leaves heal common cold and cough. Prepare a broth by boiling by mixing mashed basil leaves in water. Take it regularly every day. This soothes an irritated throat and reduces cough. Dried basil leaves are used in snuff or inhale as a remedy for colds. It cures asthma, cough, sinus congestion and phlegm in the lungs. Basil oil is used for massage and inhalation.

Basil juice applied on the skin cures ringworm problems on the skin.

Basil or tulsi stimulates blood flow. Basil contains magnesium which supports the cardiovascular system and soothes blood vessels. Taking basil juice everyday smoothens the functioning of the heart and help to maintain cholesterol and triglyceride level.

Lemon-scented basil lowers the blood sugar level. 2 ½ grams of dried basil leaf powder every morning show significant reductions in their blood glucose levels.
