Herbal Remedies for Diabetes

Diabetes indicates a high level of blood sugar. It is a metabolic disorder where the body does not produce or properly utilize insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is required to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy. The preferred blood sugar of the human body should be between 70 mg/dl -110 mg/dl at a fasting state. If blood sugar is less than 70 mg/dl, it is called hypoglycemia and if more than 110 mg /dl, it’s hyperglycemia. The main causes of diabetes are lack of exercise, overweight, stress and family history.

There are three main types of diabetes –

Type-1 diabetes occurs when the body stops producing insulin or produces less insulin. The patient is required to inject insulin.

Type-2 diabetes the body is unable to use the insulin produced by the pancreas. This kind of diabetes can be easily controlled by diet, exercise and proper weight loss.

Gestational diabetes happens to pregnant women who have never had diabetes before; in the second half of their pregnancy suddenly they have a high blood glucose level. It gets cured after the delivery of their babies.

Diabetes Remedies

Diabetes is not completely curable but controllable. The control of diabetes mostly depends on the patient. He needs to have thorough diabetes information to supervise it successfully by medication, exercise, and planning of the diet.

  • Morning and evening walk is very important.
  • Self-monitoring is important as it gives regular feedback for the patient.  Various glucose testing meters are available.
  • Soak fenugreek seeds in water and leave it overnight. Crush the seeds and sieve from the fine cloth. Drink it for at least 2 months. It is a very effective remedy.
  • Take fenugreek, bitter melon (karela) and gooseberry (amla) in equal quantity in equal quantity and dry them for a few days. Grind them, into a fine powder and consume it two times a day. Take this for at least a month.
  • Basil leaves and neem leaves each taken early morning empty stomach is very helpful.
  • Cinnamon helps in controlling blood sugar. ½ teaspoon of cinnamon should be taken daily in tea or sprinkled into foods.
