The sun along with its nine planets form a Solar System. The sun which is the center of the Solar System is a star. Star is different from the planets. The planets have no heat and light except what the Sun gives them. The nine planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
Planets like Earth and Mars are solid. Others like Jupiter and Saturn are great balls of gas and liquids. Earth is the only planet that has life. The planets do not crash into each other because they are millions of kilometers apart, from the Sun and move in an elliptical orbit.
MERCURY is the closest planet to the sun. It is too hot and too small to have an atmosphere. It has no air or water.
VENUS is the nearest planet to the earth. It is about the same height as the earth. It is the brightest light in the sky, apart from Sun and moon. Its surface is hidden under the thick clouds. Its thick atmosphere traps the Sun’s heat, so the planet is very hot.
EARTH is the only planet where life seems to exist. Its atmosphere is rich in oxygen, and there is plenty of water for life to exist here. Earth has one moon which is its natural satellite. It travels around it.
MARS is known as a Red planet because its surface is covered with a red and sandy chemical compound called iron oxide.
JUPITER is the biggest planet and the large red spot on its surface is the huge storm that is even bigger than the planet earth which is rotating mass of cloud. The planet is the mixture of liquids and gases where the high-speed wind swirls different colored bands of gas. It has 12 moons.
SATURN is the planet made up of liquids and gases. It is famous for its beautiful, shimmering set of rings which circles it. These rings are winds swirling different colored bands of gas which gives it a polished marble look. It has pieces of rocks which is covered with frozen rocks.
URANUS AND NEPTUNE are the planets that are too far that not much is known about them. They are considered to be cold, lifeless gas giants.
PLUTO is the farthest of the planet. It is about 6000 million kilometers away from the sun. It is very cold and dark as it hardly gets the light of the Sun. It is made up of rocks. It has an unusual orbit that sometimes brings it closer to the Sun than the other outer planets like Neptune. Pluto is orbited by its moon called Charon.
