The Tower of Pisa is a famous Italian monument known as ‘Le Torre Pisa’ in Italian. This makes it the most remarkable architectural structures from medieval Europe in Romanesque style. The tower is referred to as the bell tower or campanile of the cathedral complex in Pisa called Piazza Dei Miracoli which means Fields of Miracles. It is the tallest bell tower in Europe.
The construction of the Tower of Pisa began in August 1173. It continued for 200 years. It is constructed of white marble. The tower is 185 ft tall. The weight of the Tower is measured to be 14,453 tons It has 207 columns ranged around eight stories including the chambers for the bells. The bottom story consists of 15 marble arches, the next six stories have 30 archers and the eighth story is the bell chamber which has 16 arches. There are 297 steps inside the tower which leads to the top of the tower.
The underlying cause of tower leaning sideways is its construction on an unstable sand foundation. Shifting soil had destabilized the tower’s foundations. It still leans a little bit each year. The restoration work began in 1990 when the tower was closed for the tourist. Before that, the tower leaned at an angle of 5.5 degrees and after the completion of restoration in 2001, the tower tilts at an angle of 3.99 degrees.
