The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty stands in New York Harbor. Officially, the Statue is known as “Liberty Enlightening the World”. It is an incredible gift of friendship which was presented to the United States from the people of France to commemorate the 100th anniversary of American independence. It is a universal icon of freedom and democracy.

The Statue of Liberty is a huge neoclassical sculpture designed by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi and the steel framework of the statue was made by French engineer Gustave Eiffel who later made the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It took nine years to complete the statue. The Statue was shipped across the Atlantic Ocean to the USA in 214 crates. The Statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was selected as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.

The Statue of Liberty is a robed female stature representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom who bears a torch and a  tablet in the left hand evoking the law upon which is engraved the date in Roman numerals ( JULY IV MDCCLXXVI) July 4, 1776, the date of the American Declaration of Independence. It is made of copper. The Statue is 151 feet and 1 inch tall and its overall height along with the pedestal foundation is 305 feet and 6 inches. The arm holding the torch measures 46 feet. It weighs 225 tons. There are 354 steps from the pedestal to the crown of the statue with 25 windows to look out at the whole New York City. The crown has seven rays, each one of which represents seven continents and seven oceans. At the feet of the Statue lie broken chains of tyranny. Now the Statue is in green color because of the oxidation of the copper metal and seawater surrounding it.
